Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin):


Riboflavin is a component of several enzymes involved in energy metabolism, including riboflavin 5’ phosphate (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). Riboflavin is required for tissue growth and maintenance, particularly the eyes.


Riboflavin occurs in foods as FMN and FAD. These must be broken down before absorption. Absorption takes place in the upper gastrointestinal tract. In the body, riboflavin is stored in tissues freely or as FMN and FAD. Riboflavin is water-soluble and is excreted in the urine. Stores do not last long and must therefore be continually replenished.

Food Sources

Sources of riboflavin include organ meats, milk, green leafy vegetables, eggs, enriched cereal products, meat and cheese.


Symptoms of riboflavin deficiency include glossitis (inflammation of the tongue), angular stomatitis (lesions around the mouth), eye problems, dermatitis (skin irritations), itching and burning.
